Aid the Relief of Poverty and Suffering
The health status of Cambodia’s children is one of the worst in the world. In 2001 Cambodia’s children represented more than half of the population. The leading causes of death in children are malaria, dengue fever (both diseases carried by the mosquito), acute respiratory infection, typhoid, tuberculosis and anaemia.
Poor hygiene, sanitation and care, poor quality of medicine and expensive treatment, which many cannot afford, affect the high mortality rate. Approximately 40,000 children under 5 years old die each year from disease and poor health care.
Mosquito Net Project
In February 2004, Help the Cambodian Children embarked on a new project, which is to supply anti-malarial mosquito nets to the rural areas where mosquitoes are rife. Malaria is Cambodia’s deadliest disease and nets are recognised by medical experts as the best hope for eliminating the spread of malaria.
Ceramic Water Purifiers
In addition to this we have expanded our Mosquito Net Project to incorporate the distribution of Ceramic Water Purifiers. The Ceramic Water Purifier provides a low-cost way of producing safe water from contaminated sources such as open wells, ponds, canals, streams or even floodwater. The purifier has proven highly effective in eliminating microbiological contaminants. The purifier consists of a pot-shaped filter made of porous clay, designed to allow water to flow through at a rate of 1.5 to 2.6 litres per hour, sufficient for the drinking water needs of a family of six.
According to UNICEF, 70% of Cambodian inhabitants do not have access to clean uncontaminated drinking water. Both, Ceramic Water Purifiers and treated Mosquito Nets, play a vital role in eradicating disease.
